How High the Moon - Les McCann. Les Paul & Chet Atkins. How High the Moon is a jazz standard with lyrics by Nancy Hamilton and music by Morgan Lewis. It was first featured in the 1940 Broadway revue Two for the Show, where it was sung by Alfred Drake and Frances Comstock. In Two for the Show, this was a rare serious moment in an otherwise humorous revue. The earliest recorded hit version was by Benny Goodman & His Orchestra, featuring vocalist Helen Forrest. Although it was written by lyricist Nancy Hamilton and composer Morgan Lewis for the 1940 musical Two For The Show, the definitive version of How High The Moon was recorded by the husband and wife team of Les Paul and Mary Ford. In 1953, the duo appeared on an American TV show where they used the song to showcase Paul's new technique of multi-tracking to stunning effect.
