Jean-Paul Etienne Bourelly born November 23, 1960 is an American guitarist whose music crosses the boundaries of jazz fusion and rock. Bourelly was born in Chicago, Illinois, to parents from Haiti. His grandmother taught him Yoruba music. When he was ten years old, he sang at the Lyric Opera. He took lessons on piano and drums. He played acoustic guitar, but after hearing Jimi Hendrix on the radio, he bought an electric guitar with money he had saved from working at his uncle's gas station. On Machine gun for example Bourelly updates this and goes into free style signifying on the theme of poverty coupled with gang violence. Straight Ahead is funkier than the original with some real rare groove moments courtesy of Aflredo Alias's boom bouncing drumming and slick counterpoint between Bourelly and bassist TM Stevens. Jean-Paul Bourelly did play with Miles, and I don't think it is an exaggeration to say that he understood Jimi's vectors exceptionally well. This is a superb album by a gifted player. It's also an honest tribute, in the artist's own voice, to one of the forces that helped shape it. Read more. 5 people found this helpful. Jean Paul is a very fine guitarist but he should never have released this. From some place too close to the Planet Jazzrock, JP has bravely, i. e avoiding Experience material in the main, set off towards Jimi's blues planet and quite simply overshot.
