Relying heavily on extended techniques, Romancendres is a cerebral and challenging work to digest following Clara Schumann's Romantic contribution, but the detailed liner notes help connect Holliger's work with Schumann's in a meaningful and enjoyable way. Listen free to Heinz Holliger, Clara Schumann Romancendres Drei Romanzen, Op. Allegro molto, Drei Romanzen, Op. 22: II. Allegretto and more. 13 tracks 60:12. Allegro molto. Clara Schumann. Romancendres a conflation of the French terms for romance and ashes reflects Heinz Holliger's obsession with Robert Schumann's Romances, burnt by his wife Clara when the composer lapsed into mental illness. Holliger's imaginative modernist response is to create a kind of cinder music, a flare of energy leaving something dry and ashen in tone. It's an inquisitive piece in which cello and piano step tentaively around each other with the subtlety of the opening sections giving way to the hysterical intensity of RS Flügelschlagen, in which the piano. Heinz Holliger's Romancendres, for cello and piano. Schumann's Romances, destroyed by Clara, reimagined. Daniel Haefliger, vlc, Gilles Vonsattel, Holliger has always been fascinated by the relationship between mental instability and artistic creativity the music Schumann composed in 1853, just before his final mental collapse, is the starting point for the two substantial works on this disc. Heinz Holliger's lifelong fascination with the music of Robert Schumann finds further expression on this newest release: on Aschenmusik, a new interpretation of the Swiss oboist-composer's Romancendres is framed by Schumann's own works. Romancendres refers to the lost Cello Romances which Clara Schumann burned on Brahms's advice, an act of destruction which outraged Holliger and fuelled the composition of this music from theashes in 2003. It's a portrait of Schumann, and its central movements contain numerous. Heinz Robert Holliger born 21 May 1939 is a Swiss oboist, composer and conductor. Holliger was born in Langenthal, Switzerland. He began playing the oboe at age eleven, and studied at the conservatory of Bern before taking first prize for oboe in the International Competition in Geneva in 1959. A fascinating concept album circling around the fragility of artistic sensibilities in German musical and literary romanticism. Two important pieces by Swiss composer Heinz Holliger, who celebrates his 70th birthday on 21 May 2009, both of them inspired by Robert Schumann, are combined with a chamber work by Clara Schumann. They all intersect in the year 1853, when 20-year-old Johannes Brahms first visited the Schumann couple in Dusseldorf
